Photographs you will still want on the wall in thirty years

I photograph weddings across the country and further when you will have me. The work is unhurried and mostly unnoticed: I would rather catch your aunt laughing than ask her to.

We do not remember days, we remember moments

Behind the lens

I am Elena

Twelve years and something over two hundred weddings. I started out photographing kitchens for restaurants, which taught me to work quickly in a room full of people who have a job to do.

I live with my husband and a badly behaved lurcher, and I will happily drive four hours for a wedding in a field.

Elena, the photographer, smiling lightly

We had said we did not want a photographer following us around. Then we did not notice her all day, and got back four hundred pictures of our own wedding.

How the day goes

Three parts, and none of them are stressful

Morning

I arrive while everyone is still getting ready. Dresses, letters, your mother doing your hair badly on purpose. Nothing is set up.

The ceremony

Quiet lenses, no flash, and I stay out of the aisle. What I am watching is not you — it is the front row watching you.

Afterwards

Twenty minutes of portraits somewhere with good light, then back to your own party. I stay through the first dances.
